Coasters made from natural bark and sina thread. The rough, rustic strength and subtle coolness enhance the tableware. Also suitable for glass, earthenware, and copper.

In Japan, it is counted alongside Basho and Kudzu as one of the three ancient fabrics. It has been used for clothing and household items since the Jomon period.

The bark of the trunk is peeled off, and the fibers are torn into small pieces and spun into threads that are then woven into cloth. After dozens of processes, the cloth is finally completed, taking a long time.

With the spread of cotton and synthetic fibers, which are easier to mass-produce, this style gradually disappeared from Japan, but Laotian artisans continue to carry on the tradition, even today doing everything by hand.

    2013年にCREOLEとしての活動を始めた、テキスタイルデザイナーの米澤里絵さん。
    ラオスとその近隣国を訪れ、現地の職人や村で暮らす女性たちとともに、ものづくりを続けています。

    急速に発展していくラオスの暮らしのなかで、土地に根ざした技術や営みが、無理のないかたちで受け継がれていくこと。米澤さんは、そうしたあり方を大切にしています。

    ラオスの日常で使われてきた道具も、村の女性たちとともに一から作り上げた新しい形のものも。
    おだやかな日々のリズムのなかから生まれた素朴な美しさと、その土地の空気や暮らしの気配が感じられる生活道具です。
