Lenten Furoshiki

These furoshiki wrapping cloths are handmade by women of the Lenten tribe, who are known for their indigo dyeing techniques.

The Lenten people live in the mountainous region of northern Laos. They are said to have migrated from southern China, and are one of the smallest ethnic groups in Laos, with 50 minority groups.

Until recently, all the villagers wore indigo clothes they made with their own hands and lived a self-sufficient life. Although the village's appearance has changed with the times, it still retains a strong scent of its unique culture.

"Lenten" means "indigo dyeing." As the name suggests, indigo dyeing has been an integral part of their lives since ancient times. They dye and weave everything by hand, using traditional methods handed down over time and with great care, for their families and loved ones. In between housework and farm work, they tirelessly weave embroidery, stitch by stitch, freely and enthusiastically, weaving the fabric into their lives.

The nearly black indigo color, which has been dyed dozens of times, is a color unique to the Lenten people. The strong material and the gentle, soft embroidery have a gentle joy that is different from uniform beauty.
