Coasters made from natural bark and kudzu thread. The neat openwork pattern and subtle shine give them a slightly cool feel. They can also be used on glass, earthenware, copper, and tin.

In Laos, kudzu's water-resistant and sturdy properties have been utilized to make tools deeply rooted in daily life, such as nets for catching fish and bags for carrying luggage and building materials.

Kudzu is a plant with a strong life force that grows everywhere. Extracting the fibers from the plant and spinning them into thread is all done by hand, and just like with other plants, it takes a lot of time and effort. The women then knit the finished threads one by one using knitting needles.

Unlike cotton, which is produced throughout Laos, kudzu handicrafts have been passed down from generation to generation only in a limited number of villages in the north. While the craft has changed in form amid rapid development, the tradition is being passed down to the next generation.

CREOLE

Textile designer Rie Yonezawa started CREOLE in 2013. Yonezawa plans and produces products together with artisans and ethnic women from Laos and neighboring countries.

Laos is experiencing rapid development, and while some handicrafts are disappearing, others are being passed down in a different form. In order to ensure that the precious handicrafts handed down from ancient times are preserved forever, we continue to build lasting relationships and make our products.

Both items, from everyday items used in Laos to new items that Yonezawa created from scratch together with village women, have a primitive beauty born from the gentle rhythm of life.
